McLaughlin discusses his undergraduate years in the Dartmouth College Class of 1954, his service as a trustee, and his presidency of the college from 1981 to 1987. Some of the topics he covers include his friendship with John Sloan Dickey, his assessment of John Kemeny, governance of the college, his relationship with the faculty, the medical center move to Lebanon, the reinstatement of ROTC, the occupation of Parkhurst Hall, and the shanties on the college green in protest of the college's investments in South Africa.

Princeton University's Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program was started in 1946 amidst a wave of enthusiasm for the ROTC that followed World War II. It joined the Army ROTC unit on campus, which had operated since 1919, and was followed by the formation of an Air Force ROTC unit in 1951.
